In ̄uence of water table management on corn and soybean yields

چکیده
A 2-year ®eld study was conducted in eastern Ontario to evaluate the effect of water table management (WTM) on the yields of strip-cropped corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean (Glycine max Merr.). The WTM treatments consisted of two subirrigation treatments with water table controls set at 0.50 m (CWT0.5) or 0.75 m (CWT0.75) from the soil surface, and a free drainage (FD) treatment (water table 1.00 m below the soil surface. Both corn and soybean yields were higher with CWT than with FD for both years. In 1995, corn yields were 13.8% and 2.8% greater and soybean yields 8.5% and 12.9% greater, respectively, in the CWT0.5 and CWT0.75 plots than in the FD plots. Similarly, in 1996, corn yields were 6.6% and 6.9% greater and soybean yields 37.3% and 32.2% greater, respectively, in the CWT0.5 and CWT0.75 plots than in the FD plots. Yield increases obtained during the study were attributed to greater crop water uptake in the CWT plots as a result of the higher water tables. Comparison of 1995 and 1996 weather data with the long-term average of the region shows that the years of study had wetter-than-average conditions in the critical months of July and August, and that the yield increases due to WTM could be expected to be even greater during drier years. # 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Optimizing Strip-Till and No-Till Systems for Corn
Recent developments in biofuel demand and the rapid adoption of modern transgenic hybrids are changing production systems towards more corn after corn, more intensive tillage, higher plant populations, and ever higher crop residue levels at harvest. Meeting society’s needs for food, feed, and fuel from grain corn, and in the future from corn stover, requires continued refinement of tillage syst...

Row-crop agriculture is under pressure to reduce sediment and nutrient losses to surface water resources by practicing less tillage and more precise application and placement of nutrients. Field studies started in 1997 were conducted through 2002 on very low to low P-testing (3 to 5 ppm Bray P1) and medium to high-P testing (11 to 19 ppm Bray P1) sites of a Nicollet-Webster clay loam complex at...

The relative efficacy of rotations of soybean with sorghum and tropical corn for nematode management was studied for 2 years in a field infested with root-knot (Meloidogyne arenaria) and soybean cyst (Heterodera glycines, race 14) nematodes. Corn, sorghum, and soybean cv. Kirby were planted in 1989, and in 1990 the same areas were planted with seven soybean cultivars with and without at-plant a...

Nitrogen (N) management strategies that maintain high crop productivity with reduced water quality impacts are needed for tile-drained landscapes of the US Midwest. متن کاملImpacts of climate change on hydrology, water quality and crop productivity in the Ohio-Tennessee River Basin
Nonpoint source pollution from agriculture is the main source of nitrogen and phosphorus in the stream systems of the Corn Belt region in the Midwestern US. The eastern part of this region is comprised of the Ohio-Tennessee River Basin (OTRB), which is considered a key contributing area for water pollution and the Northern Gulf of Mexico hypoxic zone. A point of crucial importance in this basin...
